· SURGE: The number of Mexican military and National Guard troops that the López Obrador administration has devoted to border enforcement and migration enforcement reached a new high of 27,562, surpassing the 26,916 record during the Trump era.

· NUMBERS: Under pressure from a new U.S. administration to stem migration from Central America, government figures reveal that Mexico has now 12,282 troops deployed on its southern border and 15,280 troops on its northern border.

· PRESSURE: In April, the Biden administration said that it had secured new agreements with Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala to deploy more troops on their borders. Mexico’s new troop surge occurred in May, per government figures.

· RISK: “Mexico’s deployment of thousands of military and National Guard troops as well as other enforcement officials to its southern border repeats a cycle that places people who migrate at risk”, human rights NGO WOLA said in a statement in March.
